Real Friends Digipak

  • Real friends are an American pop punk band, and this is the EP cover for 'Put Yourself Back Together'. This album name conforms to the Pop Punk genre, which typically portrays lyrics conveying anger, social rejection, romantic rejection, disappointment, etc.
  • The imagery of the old and broken items left on the side of the road/in the road, link to the album title as they suggest the idea that something needs fixing and putting back together, or the idea of being lost, with the objects being a physical representation of the vocalist's emotions, especially due to the fact that the objects are quite homely and personal.
  • The items used in the image also connote the 'typical' pop punk style, with the use of vans and flannel shirts - generally a skater-like vibe.

  • The inside of the digipak shows continuity through the use of similar imagery, which relates to the genre of pop punk as often the the chords used are basic and repeated as well as having a catchy melody.
  • The two inside sections of the case could possibly be illustrating a before and after scenario with the two images on the left showing a phone, clock, clothes and pair of vans, whilst the image on the right portrays a contrast; a zoomed in version of the same image on the cover, where these same items are scattered and broken. Once again generating a saddening atmosphere which pop punk often does through its lyrics, despite its upbeat instrumentals - This could also be linked to the use of two contrasting images.
  • The top left of the inside cover shows text on a pale cream background, with the faded image of the items behind. The colour used for the background is similar to that of the shoes, clock and telephone, this shows a clear colour theme and continuity throughout, additionally, the colour palette is quite cold, linking back to the emotions generated through the album title.

  • The back of the cd once again uses similar imagery to the front and inside of the digipak, reinforcing the idea of this continuing emotional atmosphere which is likely to be conveyed in the songs on the album.
  • The back of the digipak states 'when all of the pieces fall apart, you have to put yourself back together', this gives the audience an idea that the contents of the album will include feelings of perhaps loneliness, disappointment, upset etc
  • The font on the digipak is easily read with bold, white font on a darker background.
  • The shot of all the items used has been positioned in a way in which highlights the road in the background. This, alongside the objects used, such as shoes and clocks, could be symbolic of the fact that even if things look bad, or are falling apart, you can move past it in time.
  • The back of the cd also contains the common features of a digipak, for example a bar code, and information about who distributed the cd.

My Chemical Romance Digipak

  • The background appears as though it should be white, but instead looks unkept and dirty, coupled with the font of the title, it creates an appearance of roguishness.
  • The lettering of the album name is odd, all of the letters are of different sizes and looks almost scratched onto the album - as if the appearance of the album isnt actually the most important aspect and should not be the focus, the album after all is predominantly about the death of someone, and therefore that should be the main focus.
  • "The Black Parade" is about a character referred to as "The Patient" who dies of cancer and the album tells the story of his death, experiences in the afterlife and subsequent reflection on his life. The character on the album cover is supposed to be the symbol, according to the band, of the parade that ensues before death comes to us and eventually leads us to the afterlife.
  • The character on the digipak clearly represents death, this is predominantly due to his skeletal face.
  • The character holds a pin to lead the parade - if we assume that the character is almost doll like, then he is holding the only thing that can hurt/kill him, this therefore holds relevamce for an album that centres around death.

Neck Deep Digipak

  1. DIGIPAK - A type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs. Digipak's usually consist of 4, 6, or 8 panels.

Neck Deep - Wishful Thinking
  • The image on the cd cover for 'Wishful Thinking', shows a fortune teller booth, with someone about to put a coin into it. This links with the title 'Wishful Thinking'. which is labelled on the booth, as the booth 'tells the future', and users are hopeful that their fortune will be good.
  • The band's name is clearly stated on the top of the fortune teller booth, making it clear to the audience who the artist is.
  • The background of the image shows a Ferris Wheel and another ride, suggesting the cover image is situated in a fair ground - stimulating that the album is full of energetic songs.
  • The image is largely based on a real fortune teller booth, 'Zoltar Speaks', from the film 'Big', which also links to a song on the album with the same name.
  • The fact that the image of the Zoltar is edited to be scarier and darker than the original suggests that people don't always get what they wish for, which links to the cd title 'Wishful Thinking' - As well as suggesting that despite the songs being energetic, which is common for a pop punk band, there may also be some deep-routed and emotional songs.
  • The back of the cover of the cd shows continuity, due to the use of a similar image to the one on the front cover - suggesting that there may be a connection or a sense of continuity in the emotions portrayed in each song of the album.
  • The bands name is also on the back of the digipak, making it clear again who the artist is.
  • The use of the light coloured background means that the text can be easily read.
  • The back of the digipak also includes significant information such as copyright and the record company.

Deaf Havana Digipak

  • The cover has an image of a young boy playing at the beach with the band members standing in the distance. This relates to the title of the album, 'Old Souls' as it is showing how they have gotten older and more mature in their music style and attitude.
  • This could also relate to how they all grew up in a seaside town so they would play at the beach when they were younger but now have grown up and returned to where they are from with a different view as they have matured.
  • This relates to the idea of them targeting an older audience who may have experienced a similar thing to they have.
  • The colours used contradict the genre stereotypes as they are usually much darker colours throughout the entirety of the digipak whereas this one uses only light colours. By doing this they have gone against the conventions of the genre, however it makes the digipak look a lot more interesting and helps it to stand out against other darker digipaks within the same genre.

  • The track list for the album is on the back of the outside case rather than on the actual digipak. This goes against the conventions of the digipak as the track list is generally on the both the outside case as well as the digipak.
  • By doing this, the audience can easily see it before buying the digipak which could encourage them to buy it if they see a track they like. It also allows the image of the inside to remain untouched our changed due to the text being not being put onto it.
  • The barcode and record label information is on the back of the case. By putting it at the bottom of the digipak it means that it does not take away from the final look of the digipak as it is not in the obstructing the image.
