30 Seconds To Mars - From Yesterday

Applying Goodwin's Theory

This music video follows Goodwin's 'star image' theory as the vocalist (as well as the rest of the band) are visual aspects within the video and there are numerous close ups of the members. The visuals also relate to the music as the vocalist has a strong, distinctive voice and the music genre is rock, and therefore portrays very passionate emotions, which in this video comes across as anger or bitterness towards the man in which the song is about, therefore the visuals in the video are of warriors and fighters, with a very bright colour pallet of mostly reds which suggest a sense of danger. As well as the visuals fitting the genre type, the lyrics also relate to the visuals; "He's a stranger to some, And a vision to none... On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of shit" The man in which the song is written about it is portrayed in a negative light and therefore it makes sense as to why the music video generates this idea of conflict. This music video is illustrative and the technical aspects, such as the mise-en-scene were extremely critical for this video in order to portray the correct narrative to the audience - Thereby following Goodwin's theory.
