Applying Goodwin's Theory
This music video follows the aspects of Goodwin's theory in the sense that it demonstrates both genre characteristics by having a 'star image' and showing a live performance, and also being a reflective narrative, almost telling the audience a story of how the vocalist is retracing their memories "
I have these thoughts, So often I ought". The music video is also illustrative as well as amplifying and thus showing a relationship between the music and the visuals, due to the fast pace editing and colour pallet. Although it is not in an obvious way, the lyrics relate to the visuals - "
Cause somebody stole, My car radio, And now I just sit in silence" - This particular line could mean that we allow people to take things from us, such as our confidence or even our sense of self worth, however much of the time many of us do nothing about it, leaving us to feel that our voice no longer matters. When you think of it in this way, the cold colour pallet relates to the sorrow in the meaning behind the lyrics and the actions of the vocalist in the first half of the music video could portray how he wants to hide his emotions behind a new identity, (the mask could be visual symbolism of this) however in the end he is still left to feel so worthless that he falls into the train track - therefore, although showing a live performance in between which fits the upbeat instrumental of the song, the narrative of the video surrounds quite a deep and personal subject.
